A few hours drive inland from Durban, South African, is one of the most tranquil and beautiful places on the planet. The Drakensberg Mountains, which surround the Kingdom of Lesotho, are a travellers dream come true and fortunately, as well as surprisingly, don’t have large numbers of tourists visiting.
The Drakensberg mountain range extends for over 600 miles from north to south however the best parts to visit are in the province of Kwazulu-Natal. Some of the more popular places to stay are Champagne Castle, Cathedral Peak and Sani Pass. It can get hot in summer and cold in winter with snowfalls. Visiting at any time of year is suitable.
The drive to the Drakensburg mountain range is spectacular; along the way you’ll see people in rural villages with mud huts as houses as well as horse drawn carts. The scenery and atmosphere is quite unlike anything else and leaves a magnificent lasting memory. The numerous larger villages such as Underberg are well worth visiting for a coffee break. Once in the Drakensberg region you’ll be surrounded by mountains and vast grasslands (the Drakensberg National Park was listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2000).
To get the most from the Drakensberg stay a few nights in one of the quality hotels or camping grounds. From the accommodation facilities the most incredible walks or horse rides may be had through the rolling hills and crystal clear mountain streams. Why not visit Tugela Falls which is the world’s second-highest waterfall? Another highlight is to walk to one of the caves where Bushmen have painted on the rock (the paintings are dated as being at least over 3000 years old).
The Drakensberg region has something for everyone, young or old alike. If visiting South Africa then a visit to this spectacular region is thoroughly recommended.
