Commissioner seeks delay in S. Sudan indepenence vote

KHARTOUM (Reuters) – South Sudan’s referendum on independence must either be delayed or some arrangements will have to be skipped, as time is too short to hold the vote as required, a referendum commission member said on Saturday.

Sudan ends direct press censorship; editors doubtful

KHARTOUM (Reuters) – Sudan has halted direct censorship of daily newspapers, journalists said on Monday, but few believed that this marked a genuine step towards press freedom which is enshrined in the constitution.

KHARTOUM (Reuters) – North Sudanese leaders said on Thursday it was impossible to hold a referendum on the future of the country’s disputed, oil-rich Abyei region on time and that the poll could be delayed or settled without a vote.

KHARTOUM (Reuters) – Europe should engage Sudan as a priority ahead of a southern referendum on independence, despite an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, a Norwegian minister said on Tuesday.

Sudan plans to build nuclear reactor-state media

KHARTOUM (Reuters) – Sudan is planning to build a nuclear reactor and its first nuclear power plant for peaceful electricity purposes by 2020, the state news agency SUNA said.
