I don’t think there is any difference in the type of foods that are cooked, but there may be a slight difference in the cooking methods and/or seasonings.
I cook greens, sweet potato pie, peas, cornbread(with no sugar), butter beans, butter peas, green beans, fried okra, fried yellow squash, peach cobbler, meatloaf, used to make fried chicken, but grill it now, creamy potato salad, fried corn…does any of this sound familiar?? I just call it cooking. lol.

What do you think? Answer below!

The difference is mostly the seasoning and style..not to mention that when you say southern home cooking it usually means beans and rice, potatoes and gravy, and barbecued anything…when you say soul food I think chicken, chitlens and ribs…..

Yeah, the seasoning is a lot of it, also soul food tends to be more fried & richer in fats. I have a recipe for dressing to go with chicken, uses a full cup of butter & some bacon grease to saute the onions & bell pepper, then buttermilk with the cornmeal. Yummmmy! But eat too much & you’re in the outhouse all night. Oh yeah, a main ingrediant is listening to the right music while ya cook & a kitchen full of dancin’ women!

(Dedicicated To Zulu Chief Shaka)

Hero who surpasses other heroes!
Swallow that disappears in the clouds,
Others disappearing into the heavens!
Son of Menzi!
Viper of Ndaba!
Erect, ready to strike,
It strikes the shields of men!
Father of the cock!
Why did it disappear over the mountains?
It annihilated men!
That is Shaka,
Son of Senzangakhona,
Of whom it is said, Bayede!
You are an elephant!
