Jeremy Wohlers, “The People of Skies” takes place in Zimbabwe in 2001. Hyperinflation and chronic fuel shortages beset the benighted country. The government of Robert Mugabe is determined to cling to power in the face of fierce opposition.
The main protagonist, Ndlovu, works in a funeral parlour. He devises a ludicrous moneymaking scheme in a vain attempt to escape his miserable circumstances. Bereaved families often use private vehicles to carry deceased loved ones to remote areas, which entitles them to more than the normal allocation of fuel. Ndlovu exploits this situation by borrowing bodies from the mortuary and selling the extra fuel on the black market.
Ndlovus scheme never runs smoothly, especially since he enlists the support of mad Archie, resident lunatic and notorious dissident. Inevitably, Ndlovus gang comes to the attention of the authorities. Ndlovu and his associates fall foul of the state security apparatus and are victimised by a particularly powerful member of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) who wants in on their scheme. It is only a matter of time before the political turmoil in the country and the absurdity of the everyday life catches up with them.

About the Author
Jeremy Wohlers was born in the United Kingdom in 1959. His family immigrated to Melbourne Australia in 1965 where he was educated. In 1981 he travelled to Africa on holiday and through a series of hitchhiking accidents ended up becoming a teacher in rural Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe. Jeremy taught in various schools in Matabeleland North for the next twenty years. From the beginning of 1983 to the end of 1985 he worked in Tsholotsho District, approximately 120 kilometres north-west of the capital of Matabeleland, Bulawayo. During this time a state of emergency was imposed resulting in the deaths of an estimated 20 000 civilians in Matabeleland North and South.
In the mid-eighties Jeremy contributed feature articles about rural life in Tsholotsho to the provincial daily, The Chronicle. In the nineties he was a regular contributor of features about Victoria Falls to The Sunday News, which is its sister paper. He left Zimbabwe with his family in 2002. They now reside in Australia.
